Wang Qingsong, The Blood of the World, 2006

The world’s blood runs through every photograph Wang Qingsong makes. In this 2006 work, a great tide of red pours across the frame — a saturated field on which the artist, like a survivor, plants a single small figure at the center. Built from layered references to Chinese history painting, the image stages the world not as a stage of triumph but as a wound: the pigments of the past, mixed into a slick and uncontained flood, return to stain the present. Wang’s tableau refuses the distance of the documentary photograph; the camera is asked to look straight at the spilt color and to refuse the comfort of a frame. Made in 2006, at the height of China’s Olympic-era acceleration, the work names what an entire society has agreed not to see: that the ground on which the new world is built is the old world’s blood.
